Based on the Section 7 of Passport Act, 2024, the Government of Nepal has issued the rules and provision regarding Passport of Nepal. The rule is called “Passport Rules, 2067 (2010). Department of Passport of Nepal Government issued Machine Readable Passport (MRP) under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

What is Machine Readable Passport?

Machine Readable passport commonly known as MRP is the standard specified by the Document 9303 of International Civil Aviation organization (ICAO). It allows immigration department of the country to keep track and record of the traveler. It use computerized system to uniquely  identify the identity of the traveller and his or her travel records.

Types (Categories) of Passport of Nepal

Nepal government issue several types of passport for several Nepalese individuals. The passport are categorized into:

1) Diplomatic Passport
Officials visiting abroad for the purpose of Governmental functions in request of concerned constitutional body or Ministry will received Diplomatic passport. For example, President, Vice-President, Prime Ministers, Chief Justice, Speaker, Ministers and more. Diplomatic Passport is also issued to the husband or wife of the diplomatic passport holder.
Color of Passport: Red
2) General Passport
The passport issued to Nepalese citizens and his or her children who is above 16 years old.
Color of Passport: Green
3) Special Passport
a) Official Passport
Officials visiting abroad for the purpose of Governmental function or study or study tour or training. The officials should be nominated by Government of Nepal, under a written request of concerned constitutional body or Ministry.
Color of Passport: Blue
b) Travel Document Passport
This the passport provided on special circumstances. i.e , If Nepalese citizen lost his/her passport in foreign land with no help and needy condition, he or she will be granted Travel Document passport. Similarly, if foreigner adopt Nepalese child legally then the child is also granted with this type of passport. There are even more.
Color of Passport: Black
c) Provisional Passport
This is the temporary passport which is provide to the Nepalese citizens who he/ has submitted an application to make a new passport, but till the machine readable passport has been issued he/she can be granted with Provisional Passport.

Who will issue Nepalese passport?

Nepalese passport are issued by Department of Passport, Nepal Government. It may issue Diplomatic and Special Passport under the recommendation of Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
