Tribhuwan University (TU) offers several masters degree program in multiple discipline. One of the most popular Masters degree among students is Masters in Business Studies simply known as MBS. MBS is a 2 year 4 semester course and has wide varieties of major such as accounting, finance, marketing and management. In order to fulfill the degree, student has to submit the research work known as thesis.

Statement of problem:

While making investment decision, investor should choose rational way for making an investment. Generally, the investors do not measure the total return and risk associated in their investment process. There are various rules and regulation made by the NEPSE established in 1994 A.D. But general public are still in dilemma whether to invest in their financial securities or not.

The general problem is that many investors are manipulated and exploited by the financial institution and other market intermediaries. Since they are unknown about security market. Not general public but there also comes problem for the university graduates and post graduated who cannot analyze risk and return while making stock investment decision.

The specific problems are listed below :-

• What is the level of risk and return of sampled commercial banks?

• What is the level of systematic risk and unsystematic risk of commercial banks?

• How to identify the appropriate financial institution for investment?

Objective of the study

The basic objectives of this study is to analyze the risk and return of sampled commercial banks in Nepal. For that the study has covered the market risk only. In order to accomplish this general objective, this study has considered the following specific objectives:-

• To study the average and year-end risk and return of sampled commercial banks
• To evaluate the systematic risk and unsystematic risk of commercial banks.
• To analyze the financial institution in terms of risk and return.
